Manchester United battled to a 3-2 victory against Newcastle United in the Premier League on Wednesday night, claiming all three points in our final home game of the 2023/24 season.
It marked the last appearance of Erik ten Hag's team at Old Trafford this season, with the Women's side gearing up to take on Chelsea on Saturday. The Reds ensured a satisfying conclusion to their home performances.
Academy graduate Kobbie Mainoo put us ahead in the first half, courtesy of an assist from fellow youngster Amad. He calmly dispatched his finish, sending us into halftime with the lead.
Newcastle quickly responded after the break through Anthony Gordon, but once again, Amad played a pivotal role, this time taking the shot himself and blasting it past Martin Dubravka in the Newcastle goal.
A superb goal from Rasmus Hojlund, just moments after his entry onto the field, seemed to secure the victory. However, there was a late scare when Lewis Hall scored a long-range effort in stoppage time. Nonetheless, the Reds held on to claim all three points.
FIRST HALF - REDS TAKE THE LEAD
With both teams eyeing European spots, the visitors started with determination, but the Reds' defense had the early answers. A moment of potential danger arose when Casemiro misplaced a pass, allowing Gordon to exploit space in the first five minutes. However, Sofyan Ambrabat raced back and executed a perfectly timed tackle in the penalty area to deny an early goal.
Five minutes later, Casemiro, playing in an improvised center-back role due to injuries, almost made amends for his earlier error in spectacular fashion. He attempted an overhead kick reminiscent of Alejandro Garnacho, nearly catching former Red Dubravka off guard, but the shot went just over the bar.
As the first half progressed, United asserted control, pressing high up the pitch and testing Dubravka with shots on target from Scott McTominay and Amad. However, they couldn't find a breakthrough.
Regular striker Hojlund began the game on the bench, with Ten Hag explaining before kickoff the importance of keeping the Danish international fresh for the remaining two matches of the season. Therefore, Bruno Fernandes took on the role of leading the line from the start.
The Portugal international, who had recently returned from injury after missing his first two club fixtures ever, played a crucial role in the opening goal. Amad passed the ball into our captain's path from the right flank, but Fernandes's clever dummy allowed the ball to reach Mainoo unmarked in the box.
Given ample time in a dangerous position, Mainoo, kept onside by Kieran Trippier, calmly chose his spot and placed his shot past Dubravka just after the half-hour mark, sending Old Trafford into a momentary standstill.
The Magpies then attempted to muster a response and came close moments later, only to be thwarted by Casemiro's heroic last-ditch sliding tackle, denying Gordon a clear shot on goal just yards out. Despite appeals for a penalty, with Amrabat also involved in the challenge, they were waved away.
Pressure mounted, and once again, Casemiro came to the rescue mere seconds after his initial intervention. This time, he positioned himself perfectly to head the ball out of danger, preserving our lead. In less than a minute, his efforts single-handedly kept the Reds in front, leaving Newcastle frustrated as they headed into halftime trailing by a goal.
SECOND HALF - AN EXCITING CONTEST
Responding to Eddie Howe's halftime instructions, the visitors emerged with renewed vigor and quickly capitalized. Jacob Murphy received the ball on the right flank, delivering a swift cross into the Reds' box, where Gordon was on hand to slot it past Onana.
United sought an immediate response as the hour approached. Fernandes gathered the ball on the edge of the box after a corner and attempted to unleash a powerful shot through Newcastle's defense. However, his effort was blocked, and the force of the shot sparked a swift counter-attack from the Magpies.
Caught off guard, Amrabat found himself as the last line of defense against three advancing Magpies. As they approached the penalty area, the responsibility fell to Alexander Isak, but the Morocco international made a miraculous block, throwing his body in front of the ball and deflecting it onto the top of the crossbar, denying Newcastle a clear chance.
This crucial intervention provided the Reds with the opportunity to swiftly transition to the attack and respond to the close call.
